Every May, the Administration for Community Living leads the nation’s observance of Older Americans Month. The 2024 theme is Powered by Connection, recognizing the profound impact of meaningful relationships and social connections on our health and well-being. AGE+ understands the critical role of social connection, not just from an individual perspective but also from a public health standpoint, particularly for older adults. Social isolation can significantly increase the risk of premature death from all causes, a risk that may rival those of smoking, obesity, and physical inactivity1. One of the most urgent ways to combat social isolation among older adults is by closing the digital divide. Digital access and literacy are vital for social connection, healthcare, information access, economic participation, and service coordination, yet nearly half of older Americans live with technological barriers. It’s alarming that older adults are one of the largest demographics without access to reliable internet—about 22 million people 65+ have no home-based internet in the country2. The digital divide is even more significant for adults who live in rural areas, have low income, or are part of a community of color. In today’s society, full inclusion requires access to the internet and digital devices as well as the ability to engage safely online. With the proper support and guidance, many older adults can gain the confidence to use technology effectively. |
It’s time for Oregon to prioritize these issues, ensuring all older adults have the tools and skills to stay connected and engaged in our digital world. Internet access and digital inclusion are not luxuries—they’re a matter of equity. |
AGE+ is ready to help break down barriers by working with partners to show how age-friendly approaches to digital literacy are good for all people. We are proud members of the Oregon Broadband Equity Coalition (OBEC) and are ready to bring an aging lens to this important, necessary work. OBEC has monthly meetings that are free and open to the public. Register for their monthly meetings here. If the digital divide has affected you or a loved one, please consider sharing your story with AGE+ here. |
